ขวัญ

n. 1. the circle or whorl of hair just behind the top of the head, which according to old-style Thai phrenology, shows the character of the individual. Two such circles are said to show knavish tendencies and are often referred to in playful banter;

2. metaphorically, the seat of a person's spirit, the tutelary spirit guarding a person, especially a child, heart, morale, courage, self-confidence; 3. rites of welcome; 4. compensation, damages; 5. gift, offering, donation; 6. heart and soul, soul spirits, something precious or invaluable.

ของขวัญ- a gift, a present;

มิ่งขวัญ- a mascot; กล่าวนินทาขวัญ- to slander, to speak evil of some one by referring individously to the protecting genie; ค่าทำขวัญ- a compensation made for injury done; ทำขวัญ- to make a compensation or to atone for an injury (whether moral or material) to a person or thing, to make an offering to fairies, spirits or genie by proper invocations and conjurations; เป็นขวัญเมือง- a monument which is the glory and pride of a city; รับขวัญ- to call back the protecting spirit by proper invocations and conjurations.

เขาเสียขวัญเลยต้องวิ่งหนี He lost heart (his courage) and had to run (flee).

ชาวเชียงใหม่ได้ทำพิธีรับขวัญสมเด็จพระราชินีแห่งเนเธอร์แลนด์ The Chiang Mai people performed rites of welcoming the Queen of the Netherlands. เขาไม่ต้องการรับค่าทำขวัญที่ศาลสั่ง He does not want to accept damages ordered by the court. ผมได้รับของขวัญจากใครคนหนึ่ง ซึ่งไม่ยอมบอกชื่อ I have received a gift from an anonymous donor. เขาเป็นขวัญใจของพรรคพวกเรา He is the heart and soul of our party. แกเป็นเด็กขวัญอ่อน She is a timid child (easily frightened). ทหารเสียขวัญ (ขวัญเสีย) The troops lost their morale. ยายจะผูกมือรับขวัญ (ผูกขวัญ, ทำขวัญ) ให้หนู Granny will tie your hand with a string and bring back your soul spirits.
